About the University of Alabama at Birmingham
The University of Alabama at Birmingham originated in 1936 when UA president George Hutcheson Denny created a Birmingham Extension Center for an inaugural group of 116. By 1945, it was chosen over Tuscaloosa for a four-year School of Medicine at Jefferson Hospital. Two decades later, Dr. Joseph Volker made the University of Alabama at Birmingham its own independent institution. In April 1969, the State Legislature passed Act 91 to create today’s three-campus system. Spiking enrollment caused the relocation to a 275-acre, 83-block Southside home in 1977. The Carnegie Foundation gave UAB Alabama’s only prestigious RU/VH status in 1994. More recently, the Collat School of Business opened a new 108,000-square-foot building with the Nielsen Innovation Lab for $37.5 million in August 2018. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Accreditation Details
On August 28, 2014, the University of Alabama at Birmingham filed the Compliance Certification Review to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Advisory Council to effectively restart the 10-year Level VI accreditation cycle under its seventh president, Dr. Ray Lannom Watts, one of Castle Connolly’s 2004 Top Doctors. Located 156 miles east via Interstate 20 in Decatur, this preferable 11-Piedmont accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to ensure the credibility of UAB’s 63 baccalaureate, 88 master’s, 39 doctoral, and 27 certificate options. Particularly, the Charles & Patsy Collat School has received dual accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) since 1982.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Application Requirements
Getting into the University of Alabama at Birmingham is labeled “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s, though 6,936 of the 7,555 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for 92 percent acceptance. First-year Dragons blazing into the B.S. in Accounting or Finance must finish a high school curriculum of at least 17 core courses. General Equivalency Diploma scores over 450 are accepted for adults age 19 and older. The Class of 2021 proudly presented a median 3.62 GPA, 25 ACT, and 1200 SAT mark. Domestic transfers are welcome with 24-90 credits of college coursework and minimum 2.0 GPAs. Foreign undergrads have an extra step for a 77 TOEFL, 176 IELA, or 120 GaoKao score of English proficiency. The Master of Accounting mandated bachelor’s majors that are regionally or AACSB accredited. Prerequisites, such as Cost Accounting and External Auditing, must be graded “B” or better. The Fast-Track M.Ac. only admits seniors carrying major GPAs above 3.3. Successful MBA in Finance entrants also exceed 480 on the GMAT exam or have 3+ years of work experience.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has priority undergrad deadlines of June 1st for Fall, November 1st for Spring, and March 15th for Summer. Hopeful MBA in Finance or Master of Accounting cohorts have until August 1st, December 1st, and May 1st respectively. Note that the Collat School of Business considers non-degree seeking candidates until August 20th or December 31st. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is billing “Yellowhammer State” undergrads $357 per credit or $10,710 annually. Non-resident B.S. in Accounting or Finance majors pay traditional tuition of $821 per credit or $24,630 per year. Added expenses are the $100 international student fee, $50 orientation fee, and $120 parking fee. Living at the Jefferson County campus’ dorms like Rast Hall costs $11,682 for room and board. UAB budgets $1,200 for books and $4,886 for miscellaneous supplies. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals around $26,096 in-state and $36,800. Undergrad online Collat School courses charge everyone just $441 per credit though. The Online Master of Accounting price is $500 per credit or $15,000 total. MBA in Finance cohorts pay slightly more at $534 per credit or $20,826 overall.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid in Lister Hill Library disburses $59.12 million yearly for 61 percent of full-time UAB Dragons to capture $7,893 on average. School of Business funds include the Dean’s NABA Scholarship, Bernard S. Steiner Jr. Endowed Scholarship, Debra Linton Scholarship, Earle Baker Memorial Scholarship, KPMG Scholarship, Ollie S. Powers Endowed Scholarship, Fetherston Scholarship, Katharine Bridges Freeland Scholarship, and David J. Vanzandt Scholarship in Finance.
