Accounting and Finance Degree Programs at Texas A&M University-Commerce

Texas A&M University-Commerce wants students to feel fully prepared with their earn their degrees, which is why it offers an undergraduate accounting program that looks at the top areas of accounting. Not only will students study nonprofit and private accounting, but they’ll also look at financial and managerial accounting. The university expects them to learn about auditing and internal control systems too. Its Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting degree program features courses such as Introduction to Business Finance, Income Tax Accounting, Economic Forecasting, Auditing, and Data and Information Management.
Those who want to work in government accounting and students who want to take the CPA exam may prefer the university’s Master of Science in Accounting program. Students will take two advanced accounting classes and two accounting electives in addition to the accounting core. That core is worth 24 credits and includes Business Law for Accounting, Accounting Research and Communication, Individual Income Tax and five other classes. Students may want to take electives such as Accounting Theory, Advanced Auditing, and Advanced Forensic Accounting. MS in Accounting students can also earn their degrees online.
This branch of Texas A&M offers a BBA in Finance too. Designed for students who want to work as investors and in other financial institutions, this program provides students with a detailed course program that they’ll follow over all four years. Students must receive permission from their advisors before making any changes to the format. They typically take Principles of Microeconomics and some accounting classes during their sophomore years and then take advanced finance courses in their junior and senior years. Those classes can include Money, Banking and Financial Markets, Advanced Financial Management, Economic Forecasting and Principles of Investments. The BBA in Finance is available as a hybrid program too.
A Master of Science in Finance degree program is available through the Commerce College of Business. Students must take prerequisites that include Principles of Macroeconomics and Business Finance. The university requires that incoming graduate students take those classes before beginning the finance program. They will also take five core finance classes, including Financial Management, Investment Seminar, and Applied Business Research. Students can then choose four courses that count as their finance electives. Texas A&M University-Commerce offers them options such as Advanced Risk and Insurance and Real Estate, Fixed Income Analysis, Advanced Finance and Economic Forecasting and Portfolio Management in Excel.
About Texas A&M University-Commerce
Texas A&M University-Commerce is a public university that is part of the Texas A&M system. Also called A&M – Commerce and TAMUC to separate it from other universities in that system, it opened as the East Texas Normal College in 1889. The State of Texas took over its operations in 1917 and renamed it the East Texas State Normal College. This new college added a graduate program that allowed teachers to complete more advanced training in the 1930s. The college became part of A&M in 1996. A&M – Commerce now offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs for all its students and has an enrollment of more than 12,000.
Texas A&M University-Commerce Accreditation Details
TAMUC has accreditation for its business programs from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This applies to both its accounting and finance programs at the undergrad and graduate levels. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted TAMUC the regional accreditation that lets it accepts credits from other schools and to give students who need some help a strong financial aid package.
Texas A&M University-Commerce Application Requirements
Students applying to A&M – Commerce must meet either the application requirements for undergrads or graduate students. Undergrads must prepare for college with a high school curriculum that includes four units of English, math, social science, science and two units of any foreign language. They will submit their official transcripts to show that they followed this type of curriculum. It grants automatic acceptance to students who either scored 1060 on the SAT, 21 on the ACT or rank in the top 30 percent of their high school classes. Students only need to meet one of these requirements. Students will submit the A&M application, pay the application fee and then submit their test scores and transcripts. Accepted undergrads must take assessment tests to let the university see the skills they have.
Prospective graduate students will set up an account, which the university calls a myLeo account. They can then log in and apply for admission. The application has an attached $50 fee that is only due when the applicant actually submits his or her application. All incoming graduate students must submit official transcripts from each school they attended and an official GRE score. A grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required for any business major. Students with a lower GPA can get conditional acceptance. They must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in all their classes or risk the university dropping them from their programs.
Tuition and Financial Aid
A&M – Commerce offers a guaranteed tuition plan for incoming freshmen that fixes their rate to $4,483 per semester for each of the four years that it will take for them to earn their degrees. A similar plan is available for those who transfer to the university with up to 60 credits. Undergrads may also qualify for a rebate that gives them back up to $2,000 when they graduate. Those who use the right school code and apply for financial aid with the FAFSA may get federal loans and some grants. The university also has its own work-study program and some scholarships.
Graduate students can qualify for scholarships too, but many students will want to apply for an assistant job on the TAMUC campus. While teaching assistants help professors run their classes and grade papers, research assistants help professors with their upcoming research projects. Students can also apply for loans via the FAFSA and use alternative loans too. The guaranteed tuition plan for graduate students allows all those students to qualify for the Texas resident rate. They pay $3,292 per semester to complete a two-year graduate program. Any student enrolled in a Texas A&M University-Commerce finance or accounting degree program qualifies for a guaranteed tuition plan.
