About Southern New Hampshire University

The New Hampshire Accounting and Secretarial School opened in 1932 as a small private school designed to teach bookkeepers. The program took two years to complete and provided a flexible schedule that was unusual in those days. Students could begin classes any Monday, attend at night and were able to use an installment plan to pay tuition. Only if they mastered lower-level courses could the move to the next level and instructors were all college educated with experience in their field.

The start of World War II added another facet to the school. At Manchester Air Base, military members were instructed in typing, English and business math during the day and performed duties for the military at night. Disabled veterans were accepted into vocational programs at the school as well.

The school became the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce in the early 1960s and became a non-profit institution and the name changed to New Hampshire College, moving in 1971 to a 300-acre campus on the Merrimack River. The first internet-based program was launched in 1995 and in 1998, the first online doctoral program was offered at the school.

Today, Southern New Hampshire University has more than 3,000 on-campus and over 90,000 online students.
