American Intercontinental University

American Intercontinental University, also referred to as AIU, is a for-profit institution that encourages students to sign up throughout the year. The university, which offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees, is owned by the Career Education Corporation. It educates more than 15,000 students each year.

Accreditation

AIU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association as of 2009. This enables the institution to award associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees to its graduates.

History

An American couple founded AIU in Switzerland in 1970. It was originally a fashion school, but it expanded to encompass the arts by 1978. AIU opened schools in London, Atlanta, Houston and Weston. By 1996, it was repurchased and given a new name. In 2002, the online campus opened.

Associate Degree

American Intercontinental University offers associate degrees consisting of about 90 credits each. These programs typically take 18 months to complete.

The Associate of Arts in Business Administration utilizes a liberal arts curriculum with a foundation in business courses. These courses allow students to learn critical thinking and communication skills. Courses include marketing, banking and economics. All of AIU’s business administration degrees are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

The Associate of Science in Criminal Justice emphasizes courses in investigation, courts, corrections and juvenile justice. Core courses include Crime Causation, Introduction to Criminal Law and Foundations of Corrections.

Bachelor’s Degrees

These programs typically require between three and four years to complete. Each program has its own specific curriculum that includes general education courses in addition to major-oriented classes.

AIU’s Bachelor of Business Administration offers specializations in accounting, entrepreneurship, fashion marketing, finance, healthcare management, human resource management, international business, management and operations management. Students also have the option of taking a general specialization.

AIU also offers a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, emphasizing the role of corrections and investigation in the criminal process. Specializations in this area include corrections and case management, forensic science, homeland security and law enforcement.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Marketing and Design is perfect for hopeful fashion retailers and marketers. Students may opt to focus on either design or marketing, depending on his or her preference.

One of the more popular programs in recent years has been the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Production. This degree encourages students to learn about the skill involved in post-production, sound design and creation of media. AIU uses computer simulations to teach the material.

American Intercontinental University’s Bachelor of Information Technology specializes in computer-based systems, but this program also emphasizes ethical and legal implications surrounding the industry. Master’s Degree

Many of AIU’s students pursuing graduate education do so online so that they can work at the same time. The master’s program is incredibly flexible, typically requiring 11 months to complete.

The school also offers a Master of Information Technology. This program emphasizes the importance of considering environmental issues and database solutions. Students will learn to evaluate information systems and to create an effective business environment. Specializations include Information Assurance and Security and IT Project Management.

The school’s graduate accounting program is designed to prepare students to pass the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants examination and become licensed. Required courses include Advanced Accounting, Economics and Business Law, and the program emphasizes the roles of leadership and ethics in the industry.

Many graduate students choose to study healthcare management. The Master of Healthcare Management enables graduates to work in hospitals, nursing homes and insurance.
